Breast Augmentation or Breast Reduction Surgery: The Facts
By Samantha Veer
As we age, changes show up in our bodies. Women may notice their breasts sag. Some women simply want breast augmentation or reduction for cosmetic and or psychological reasons. Breast cosmetic surgery is a major procedure and you should know the facts before you engage in any surgery.
First ask yourself why you want this type of cosmetic surgery. Is it for you, because you want to look and feel better? Surgery presents risks such as infection, scars, blood clots, bleeding, and negative reaction to anesthesia. Loss of sensation, and a chance implants can leak or interfere with mammogram results. Discuss risks with your surgeon. Plastic surgery has become less complication these days, but bear in mind all surgery involves risk.
For breast augmentation the surgeon makes a small incision underneath the breast, lifts the breast and the skin tissue and between the pectoral muscles makes a pocket to place the implant. The area is then stitched and bandaged. The whole procedure is said to take about two hours.
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia. A two to four hour procedure removes fat and glandular tissue and also tightens skins. After the surgery breasts are bound with a surgical bra or bandages. Stitches come out in a week. Bandages and or surgical bra is usually worn for about four weeks during healing.
